LOS ANGELES, CA - 5/6/19 — Independent publisher Adam Comics is pleased to announce the launch of a Kickstarter campaign for its premier ongoing series ZAHRA THE SHADOW FLAME, a thrilling coming-of-age story, brimming with superheroics, Middle Eastern folklore, and a bold perspective on the role of women in the Middle East.
Zahra Darwesh is the last in a familial line of mystically powered women, a fact she must keep hidden to avoid being hunted as a witch like her ancestors. When an emergency at her high school forces her out of hiding, Zahra is set on a dangerous path into the wilds of United Arabia, a path that will lead her to discover hard truths about herself and her heritage.
Series creators Rakan Sindi and Kali Baker-Johnson aimed to create a superhero for the new youth culture taking hold in Saudi Arabia and the diaspora. The first issue takes cues from recent Saudi Arabian history, such as women gaining the right to drive and the Mecca school girl’s fire of 2002. “We wanted to create a superhero that Middle Eastern youth could relate to, while also demystifying the Muslim world for the West,” says Sindi. “We think we ended up with something really unique.”
The Kickstarter campaign will run during the Islamic holiday of Ramadan, from May 6th until June 4th, with the goal of funding issues #3 and #4 which will complete the series' first story arc. Perks include signed issues, a trade paperback collecting issues #1-4, and behind the scenes materials like audio commentary from the series' writers. Supporters can even have their own likeness drawn into the background of the third issue for a pledge of $150.
ZAHRA THE SHADOW FLAME #1 is free to download now from AdamComicsCo.com, in both English and Arabic versions. ZAHRA THE SHADOW FLAME #2 is also available from the Adam Comics website in English for $2.99. Both issues are also available through Comixology.
